Between lakes Monona and Mendota, Wisconsin’s vibrant capital is renowned for scenic beauty, with more than 200 parks providing abundant outdoor fun, from summer hiking, biking, swimming and sailing to winter cross-country skiing, snow sailing, and ice fishing. Greater Madison was once occupied by Indian mound builders, with some burial mounds surviving to this day. By 1860, Wisconsin had become a state, with Madison attracting European and Scandinavian immigrants, followed by Civil War veterans. Winnebago Indians continued living among settlers, and family run enterprises tied to brewing and farming helped establish a reputation as a beer and dairy state. Madison attractions include the Henry Vilas Zoo and Museum Mile. Cultural allure comes via the Madison Repertory Theater, Madison Opera and Madison Symphony. Other attractions include the Olbrich Botanical Gardens and the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. State Street, a pedestrian mall linking the U-W Madison campus with the Capitol Square, is lined with shops, restaurants and outdoor cafes. In fact, argument has been made that Madison has more restaurants per capita than any other American city, heavy on ethnic eateries and brew pubs to keep good times rolling. Major malls include East Towne, Hilldale, West Towne, Westgate, and Johnson Creek Outlet Center, 30 miles east of Madison with 60 brand name stores. Greater Madison lodging boasts more than 8,000 rooms in accommodations from bed and breakfasts, inns, and motels to luxury hotels.
